I am in Azerbaijan

So, where is that?  What’s this place about? This page will answer those types of questions.

1. Where?  Azerbaijan is located in the Caucasus Region in EurAsia (between Europe and Asia)–essentially the Middle East.  It is south of Russia, north of Iran, west of the Caspian Sea, and east of Armenia and Georgia.

2. General Facts: Capital–Baku. Area–about the size of Maine. Population–9 million. Religion–93% Muslim.

3. Language: Azerbaijani (which is Turkish based).

4. Climate: New England winters and Pennsylvania hot humid summers.

5. GDP growth rate–9% in 2009. Major exports–oil and gas.

6. Brief History: Azerbaijan was known as the “Land of Fire” from its oil reserves and because it was the center of Zoroastrian faith. Some of its early inhabitants were Turkish nomads. The region has been claimed by many conquerers throughout the centuries–642 AD by the Arabs; 1200s by the Mongols; sporadically by the Ottomans, Russians, and Persians; and in 1922 become part of the USSR.  In 1991 Azerbaijan gained permenant independence.
